The federation of denominational colleges in Ontario with the University of Toronto, long debated (especially in 1850, 1853, and 1860), became a reality in 1890 for Victoria College and some years later for Trinity and St Michael’s. We should, however, look briefly at the teaching of French and those who taught it in these colleges before federation.
